The following magical creatures exist in Elquin. No more, no less; though if you have a suggestion we will certainly consider adding it!
Elves are taller than humans, statuesque, with variations in color as much as humans. They have long, pointed ears, and rarely ever are born with blue eyes, and very rarely ever become overweight. They tend to be a little snooty, even overbearing at times, but are wonderful with nature and animals. They can live for thousands of years if they choose to, and generally don't reproduce at nearly the rate of other species with shorter lifespans.
Though the word faerie is usually a general term, in this case, it refers to the tiny winged creatures that come in a variety of rainbow colors. However, against the usual myths, faeries have the ability to change their size (Though their natural state is still the tiny fairie we know of) and hide their wings if they choose to. Though you would still know someone was a fairie because they were entirely a pink, green, or yellow hue, they could choose to be the size of the average human and completely without wings. Their lifespans are comparable to the average human, as well.
Pixies are humanlike, always with red hair and strangely bright green eyes. They tend to be rather malicious tricksters, and can change size at will (rare in anyone with less than half pixie blood), though their natural size is comparable to the size of a pure fairie. Most pixies have a large grudge against Faeries, thanks to a very old war that ended centuries previously. Though they don't have extended lifespans from their magical blood, pixies do have incredibly large appetites and unbelievably fast metabolisms.
Dragons have two natural forms--a human one, with some slight differences; and the usual giant lizard one that we regularly see. They tend to be extremely intelligent, stubborn, and strong; though some are jumpy in their human form, because they feel unprotected. Pure dragons can usually transform back and forth from their dragon to human forms, but crossbreeds are very rarely able to transform to dragon form--they are far more likely to have dragonlike features (wings, scales, pointed ears) but the human or humanoid shape of whatever other blood they possess.
The werewolf is any creature who has been bitten by another werewolf. They cannot be born, they are always made. However, because becoming a werewolf alters a person straight into their DNA, a werewolf's children do tend to come out with some abnormalities, such as a sensitivity to the moon cycle and heightened, wolflike senses. Werewolves only transform the night of a full moon.
Vampires are nocturnal, undead creatures who feed on the blood of others. It is possible to be born a vampire under certain omens; become a vampire through a bite; or die and become a vampire because of improper burial rituals. Victims don't always become vampires, because they are often killed in the feeding process. If they aren't killed, they'll display bloodthirsty tendencies for about a week, and then return to their mostly normal selves. To be turned by a vampire, the victim must drink of their blood, as well.
The selkie has a human form like a dragon, but at difference, they are born with a seal skin. This can be removed so the selkie can live a human life, but the skin must be hidden very carefully. If it is found by anyone, that person can force the selkie to marry them. However, if the selkie should find his or her skin, they are automatically freed and will return to the sea--or to their former lives, with a better hiding spot.
Nymphs are creatures with a strong connection to an aspect of nature. It wouldn't be uncommon to see a band of wood nymphs circled around a tree, either dancing for it or defending it from a person with a saw in his hand; for example. Nymphs are also rather well known for their habit of seducing anyone they come across, just for fun.
Mermaids are ocean-bound beings, beautiful, but with webbed fingers, fins along their forearms, and of course, a fish tail in place of legs. They've been known to marry land people anyway, and the children of these relationships must choose between legs and a fin on their 13th birthday.
Centaurs are half horse, half man (or woman). They are very proud, very intelligent, and have a huge knack for divination and astrology. ..I'm not sure what would happen if they mated with something else, but you're welcome to make something up.
These little goat people are small, with the legs of a goat and horns growing from their curly-haired heads. Their torso and arms are entirely human. They have the same variations in appearance as a human and as a goat, respectively to their halves, of course.
These shape-changers usually stay in human form, but they obviously don't have to because of their shape changing powers. They have blue blood that creates a blue complexion. No matter what form they take, they will always have a blue cast to them; and no matter what they transform into, it must be of a similar mass to their natural body size. They could transform into a mouse, but they would be a human-sized mouse, or into a hippogriff, but they would be a human-sized hippogriff.
These sea-nymphs are absolutely obsessed with the sea. Part-Nereids have been known to build their homes right on the ocean so that they can run to it whenever they can. They always have the lightest possible blonde hair.
A nixie is a water sprite; small and twiggy in build, always with huge sea-blue eyes. Nixies are such excellent singers that sometimes they're banned from music competitions.
Though Elquin has a high human population, a percentage of this population is made up of Wizards. These are humans with magical abilities of any strength; they have the ability to conjure things and cast spells. Some wizards can barely cause a pot to stir itself; others could build an entire apartment complex without lifting a tool by hand. The degree of a person's magical ability can be altered through training, and it is believed that even normal humans can be trained into having magical abilities given enough time.
